Hair Dye- How Does it Work? Part 2
Demi-permanent hair dye colours will usually last quite lot longer than the semi-permanent version, at around 22-30 shampoos or washes. The pre-coloured molecules get into the hair via the cuticle, the same as the semi-permanent dye but once it enters the hairs cortex, the molecules fuse with other similar molecules to produce medium sized colour molecules. Because these molecules are much larger in size, they will take that much longer to wash or rinse out of the hair. Demi-permanent hair dye doesn't contain ammonia so the natural pigmentation of your hair cannot be lightened, but it does contain a tiny amount of peroxide which will give a slight colour change. Permanent hair dye is what people use for major hair colour changes, going from blonde to black or vice-versa, for example. This type of hair dye uses varying amounts of peroxide and ammonia, so when these molecules enter the hair they react and grow to such a size that they can't actually be rinsed or washed out. The only way out with this kind of hair dyeing method, apart from re-dyeing that is, is to let the hair grow out. The hair dye works by reacting with, and then lightening, your natural hair pigmentation, creating a new base and then by adding a new permanent colour which combines with your own natural hair pigment. This is why the colour you may have chosen to dye your hair with may look slightly different on you than it would on someone else who has used the same colour. As hair grows half an inch a month, this type of hair dye will give you the problem of roots, so you will probably need to touch up the dye every few weeks or so. |
